Apple to Unveil Its Awkwardly Named iPhone 5se on March 15th?

If reports are to be believed, Apple is all set to launch an iPhone, an iPad Air and possibly a bunch of Apple Watch bands at an event in March. Since last year, rumors about Apple launching a lower-end iPhone model, also called as iPhone 6c, are surfacing all over the Internet. But the reports suggests that Apple is indeed launching a lower-end iPhone model, but it will be called iPhone 5se.

iPhone 5se, named more awkwardly than Apple’s “Smart” battery case released last year will be an “enhanced” variant of iPhone 5s. According to leaked details surfacing over the Web, the “se” suffix could mean “Special Edition” or iPhone 5s “Enhanced”. iPhone 5se will carry a 4-inch screen with a design similar to iPhone 5s.

iPhone 5se will reportedly receive upgraded internals, software and hardware features. We can call it an iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s “hybrid”. iPhone 5se will includes A9 chip, improved cameras along with support for Live Photos, and NFC for Apple Pay. Apple’s previous lower-end (read “cheap”) iPhone was iPhone 5c which was unveiled in September 2013.

iPhone 5c surprisingly carried plastic body. This time around though, Apple is not going to hit the plastic road. It seems that iPhone 5se will be packed in à la iPhone 5s body, which could be “less-shiny” as 9to5Mac reports. iPhone 5se prices will start from $450 for 16GB, same as iPhone 5s.

Along with iPhone 5se, Apple will also reportedly unveil iPad Air 3 at the March event. iPad Air 3 will become the first upgrade to Apple’s lightweight 9.7-inch tablet lineup which saw the launch of iPad Air 2 in October 2014. iPad Air 3 is expected to receive iPad Pro features like enhanced speakers and a Smart Connector with possibility of a smaller Smart Keyboard.

On Apple Watch side, Apple is expected to present new Sport bands in various colors and some high-end accessories which may include new bands from retailer Hermès and a black Milanese Loop band.

Apple likes to keep stuff “secretive” so that it can “surprise” us and as usual, Apple has not confirmed (or denied) anything so far.

Meanwhile, Samsung has announced the launch date of its next Galaxy flagship. Samsung will unveil Galaxy S7 on 21st February, just a day ahead of Mobile World Congress (MWC) which will kick-off on 22nd February.

What are your thoughts about Apple’s March 15th event? Will Apple launch an iPhone? Can releasing two iPhone models a year be a good strategy for Apple? Let us know in comments.
